Microneedling 101

Hi darlings

I hope you're all good! This education blog is going to be about one of my FAVE treatments to ever do - microneedling! I wanted to touch on questions I personally get asked by students and by clients.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is also known as skin needling and Collagen Induction therapy (CIT). If you see it around being called these names, please know it is all the same treatment (this is a good thing to explain to your clients too).

A machine or hand derma roller has tiny little needles which are placed on the skin to create tiny little punctures. This is making a tiny little wounds in the skin which then, your body immediately reacts and starts the wound healing phase to fix it. This in turn renews the skin cells quicker than what your body would do without the “wound” and thats when you start seeing results.

What is microneedling used for?

Microneedling is used for a range of skin concerns not just for the face but for the body too

  • Scars from acne to wound scars

  • Skin resurfacing

  • Skin tightening

  • Sun damage

  • Alopecia

  • Enlarged pores

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Stretch marks

What device is best - Machine or derma roller?

From a professional perspective a derma roller can only go to 1mm deep in the skin, is expensive due to having to change the whole device every time and the roller can cause tears in the skin which is not good, especially if you have a client fitzpatrick 3+ ( thats brown and black people like me) who is prone to keloid caring and is prone to hyperpigmentation, you can cause more damage than good!) and doesn't really produce the effects of a in clinic medical grade treatment.

From a client perspective, if they are using needling for hair therapy to stimulate growth or doing aftercare with one in between treatments (if they have been advised from their practitioner) its safe for them to do so at home but can become pricey because of how many devices they will need to use.

For safe, effective, cost effective needling a microneedling device such as raffeine or skinpen are the best to use as they can do multiple depths are will not cause any other damage to the skin. In my clinic I use Raffeine device.

How often can you have microneedling done?

Microneedling is best as a course of treatments rather than a one off. Don't get me wrong, you can see some results from one treatment, but to get good, long lasting and effective results you/ the client will need a course. Each treatment should be around 6-8 weeks apart. This is not exact, depending on what, who and where you are treating it can differ.

Tip: make sure your client has started on their home care plan before they come into clinic, this will build up a tolerance to products active ingredients and it preps them for their aftercare, you know exactly what they are using and they understand why they are using it. It is crucial the client protects their skin after any treatment as they are more vulnerable to contraindications and contractions (things that can happen like infections, sun burn etc).

For microneedling aftercare, make sure they have in their home care products, a medical SPF (preferably mineral) and a recovery balm to help with skin healing. In my clinic you’re not having the treatment if you can't look after your skin at home.

In clinic tips:

  • Stock products so clients can buy them from you. Easy access for them and extra cash for you!

  • Have info ready so clients can see what they are going to be having - remember education for us as professionals and clients is key! Get your booking system to send them info as soon as they book in so you can see they have had it directly to their inbox.

I hope you’ve found this useful. If you would like to add this treatment to your clinic list and/or enrol onto our in depth microneedling course you can do so here: https://www.thetopmostacademy.com/product-page/advanced-microneedling

All of our courses are very inclusive for all of the fitzpatrick scale and ethnicities, from knowledge, treatment to products.

If you have any questions or need advice please feel free to message, email or call me!
